A New Conversation About Dreams - The Power of Intention

It’s time to change the way we think and speak about our dreams. Transforming a conversation, just like manifesting a dream, begins by setting an intention. Your intentions will assist you in taking greater control of your life.

A working definition for intention is: “to have in mind a purpose or plan, to direct the mind, to aim”. Lacking intention, we sometimes stray without meaning or direction. But with it, all the forces of the universe can align to make even the most impossible, possible. My intention is to transform the conversation around dreams from fear and doubt, to hope and possibility, followed by action and results.

Some might say this is not the right time to dream. The media and masses say, “It’s time to be realistic.” Consider this. Without our dreams all we have is our present reality. Reality is not a bad thing. We have to know where we are so we can design the appropriate strategy for getting to where we want to be. The challenge is our attitude around “reality” and being “realistic” and what being realistic has cost us. Often that’s our passion and joy, our hopes and dreams.

Given the unknowns and sometimes craziness of life, there’s never been a more important time to dream and setting your intention is the first step. When should you set an intention? You could set an intention every day. Your intention could be to work less and make more, or to find a new career that you are passionate about. It could be to get healthy and physically fit, or to spend more quality time with loved ones or alone. It can be specific and about something in particular or more like a quality, such as to be more relaxed or involved with life.

At seventy, Bessie set an intention to become a world famous photographer. Although many thought she was too old, she didn’t. She entered a photo contest where she won the first prize of $10,000. Her prize-winning photo toured around the world with a Kodak exhibit. She told me, “We’re never too old to make a dream come true.”

People set intentions on all kinds of dreams; to get married or have children, to get a job or make a career change, to write a book, lose weight, or move to a foreign country. When you set an intention and then act on it to demonstrate your commitment, amazing things occur. Intention can also give us fortitude for dealing with tough times.

I am currently rebuilding my home. I simply wanted to add on a new bathroom, but with all the surprises an old (and charming) house can offer, every turn has been a shock, sometimes even a nightmare. It looks like the entire building may need to be rebuilt. My intention is to live through this process with dignity and grace. I am tested daily. It’s often not easy, but this intention has helped me maintain composure, sanity, and on a good day, a sense of humor. Intention can be used for community or social issues, global events or (literally) in your own backyard.

For example:

• Before you get out of bed, you can intend to have a fun or productive day.

• Before you leave the house, you can intend to have quality time with your family or roommate.

• Before you start your car, you can intend to have a safe ride to work.

• Before you enter your workplace, you can intend to learn something new or be helpful.

• Before the meeting begins, you can intend to be brilliant or calm.

First Steps:

1. Get clear about something you want and write it down.

2. Share your intention with someone in a way that will supportively hold you accountable to taking action.

3. Do something today to demonstrate your commitment to your intention.

4. Acknowledge that you did what you said you would and then, take the next step.

By setting an intention, you make it clear to yourself and others, just what you plan to do. Set an intention to redefine what it means to be serious about your dreams.

Are You Willing To Risk It?

What would your life be like if you kept doing everything the same way? If you stood still for the next 10 or 20 years and didn’t make progress with anything? If you stayed stuck in the same situations that you’re in now?

If you stayed at the same job, with the same pay, lived at the same apartment? What if nothing changed but the years? You still would have goals and dreams but what if you never took action on any of them?

How long are you going to go through the same story lines like the soap operas do? Just changing the names and faces as time rolls on. Is it going to take one, two or even ten years for you to figure it out? What is it going to take for you to realize that you are just replaying the same events over and over again?

You say you want to make a change in your life but you are afraid to take that first step. If you don’t move you won’t get anywhere. You’ll be stuck in the same situations and will repeat them over and over again. You can’t let your fear keep you frozen. If you do you’ll only have a life full of regrets and what ifs.

Are you willing to forget your dreams and repeat the same scenarios for the rest of your life? Only to say that you lived a safe life. And what’s the point of life if you don’t take risks every now and then?

Is it worth it for you to go after your dreams? What’s the worst that can happen? Sure there’s that possibility of failure. But you can’t succeed at anything in life if you don’t at least give it a try.

Fear of failure can be paralyzing. You need to break yourself free from the grip of fear. The only thing worse than failure is not trying at all. You know you have the potential within you so take the chance of a lifetime and go for it. Reach for your dreams. You just might go further than you expected.

Failure is not a bad word, it’s just another experience that you have the opportunity to learn and grow from. So don’t be afraid of it. Besides if you do fail you might find a way to reach you dreams that you wouldn’t have thought of before. So if you don’t try and give yourself a chance to succeed or fail you’re holding out on many of life’s possibilities.

Stay focused on your dream and make it happen. Isn’t it worth it?

How To Choose The Right Goals To Focus On

Sometimes setting goals alone is not the only problem that you must face. Sometimes, choosing the right goals to begin with is harder.

Basically, you can choose to work any goal that you feel is necessary for your health, stability and happiness.

Goal setting is nothing more than a formal process for personal planning. By setting goals on a routine basis you decide what you want to achieve, and then move in a step-by-step manner towards the achievement of these goals.

The process of setting goals and targets allows you to choose where you want to go in life. By knowing exactly what you want to achieve, you know what you have to concentrate on to do it. You also know what nothing more than a distraction is.

Goal setting is a standard technique used by professional athletes, successful business people and high achievers in all fields. It gives you long term vision and provides you with short term motivation.

It helps to focus your attention and knowledge which helps you to organize your resources. By setting sharp and clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless effort.

By setting goals, you will also raise your self confidence, as you recognize your and ability to meet the goals that you have set. The process of achieving goals and seeing this achievement gives you confidence that you will be able to achieve higher and more difficult goals later on.

Goals are set on a number of different levels. In the first place, you decide what you want to do with your life and what large scale goals you want to achieve.

Second, you break these down into the smaller aims that you must hit so that you reach your overall lifetime goals.

Finally, once you have your plan, you start working towards achieving it.

Submitting Your Website To The Search Engines

Proper website promotion is becoming increasingly important. There are literally billions of web pages on the Internet, which makes getting noticed online a very difficult task. The first step to getting your web page visited by your target audience is to submit the page to the search engines. You may think that the search engines, like Yahoo, Google, Altavista, or Excite, somehow search every document on every server to find a match, but that is not the case. In order for a website to be included in search results, the web crawler, or search engine, has to know that the site exists. This is where submitting your website to the search engines becomes important. This is your way of telling the search engines that you exist, so they can point potential viewers to your site. There are several ways to go about submitting your site to the various search engines. You can submit your site directly to each individual search engine, you can use an agent to submit your website for you, or you can use automated article submitters.

The first option is certainly the cheapest option, and you will know that the job is done because you will have done it yourself, but there are several important drawbacks to consider if you are thinking about submitting your website to search engines directly. While it is true that it only costs you your time and there will be no doubt in your mind that it has been done, there are some difficulties. The first one is that it can be a very time-consuming and tedious process. Secondly, submitting these forms is an art; you want to get it right so that you get the best page-ranking possible. If you have no or limited experience in this area, you may want to think twice before submitting articles to the search engines on your own. That being said, if you know what to do and how to do it, submitting on your own can save you money and maybe even a headache or two.

Another option is to use an agent. This is a real live person who will submit your website to all the search engines manually. This person will ensure that it is done properly, in a timely manner, and in such a way that will maximize your page views. Again, there are some things to consider when you are looking at this option. For starters, you need to make sure you are getting someone reputable who will actually do the job his or herself, and not delegate it to an online submission service, or else you could just be throwing your money away. Also, an agent can be very pricey, so you need to make sure that your website is sufficiently unique to call for such a specialized service.

Lastly, there are automated article submitters all over the World Wide Web. Finding one should not be difficult. Finding a reputable one that is worth the money is a different story. Most of these services come pretty cheap, but you don’t get the high level of service you would get through an agent or by doing the job yourself. However, depending on what your specific needs are, the low price and the speed make these submission services an attractive option for many web site owners and webmasters. It is wise to check out your favorite online trade association to make sure that the site you are dealing with is legitimate. Look for things like physical addresses and phone numbers to help verify the legitimacy of any given website submission service.

Bodybuilding and Exercise - The Ten Commandments in Making of a Champion!

1. Fill your life up with different hobbies! - Bodybuilding Champions realize
working out is not everything there is in life. Your life does not center on the gym.
Experience other activities. Get a hobby; join a group; do outdoor activities in order
to stay mentally strong. One day you will realize, your identity is not built on the
sport of bodybuilding.

2. Leave your ego at the door! - Bodybuilding Champions focus on the process
and not on themselves. Your life should not center on you and you alone. True
Champions in any sport know that it is what the sport gives to your heart that
matters most, not the image you want to project.

3. Never forget where you come from! - Bodybuilding Champions never forget
what the sport has taught them, where they have been or who has helped them
along the way. Bodybuilding and life share the same principles: what you gain inside
is more valuable than anything physical.

4. More is not better! - Bodybuilding Champions work smarter not harder.
Efficiency and knowledge is the key to becoming a true champion. Less effort and
more results usually work best. Be smart in your training and practice a little
common sense when needing to rest.

5. Get a mentor- Bodybuilding Champions are never afraid to ask for help.
Champs know that knowledge is power. Learn from others, never be afraid of
change, and champion yourself after as many people as you can.

6. Feed the Spirit! Bodybuilding Champions understand the mind is their biggest
competitor and the heart is their biggest asset. If you kill your spirit or passion for
the sport, you have lost the main purpose for your efforts.

7. Pay your dues and do not cheat by taking steroids - Bodybuilding Champions
SHOULD do it the right way, without drugs! You can never replace hard work, and
hard work always pays off. Others may not know you are cheating, but at the end of
the day you do. What matters most to you?

8. Teach others what you have learned - Bodybuilding Champions help others
gain knowledge. The best champions are those who share the wealth, teach others
and inspire hearts. Your success is only as strong as your ability to share what you
have learned.

9. Be honest in all you do - Bodybuilding Champions know when to stop. No
matter how difficult it may be on the ego, always be true to self and to others.
Denying reality robs the heart of the happiness of life. Champions compete in their
sport for the love of game, not for the chance to defy the odds of life.

10. Be you and no one else- Bodybuilding Champions do not pretend to be
someone they are not. Hiding behind your exterior is the surest way to a lonely,
unhappy life. True champions have no needs to pretend. GREATNESS NEEDS NO
EXPLANATION!

The Death of Potential

While reading my latest book on politics and economics, I came across a reference to a bible story called “Parable of the Talents’. In this story three servants are each give ‘talents’ (a monetary denomination used by the Greeks). To the first, the master gave 5 talents, to the second he gave 2 and to the third he gave 1 talent. The master gave each a different amount of money (talents), according to their ability.

Two of the servants doubled their money and the master was pleased with their results. The third servant, fearful of losing it, buried his money where no one benefited from it, including himself.

When the master summoned the third servant to get an accounting of what he had done with his talent, he was angry and displeased to find out the servant had simply buried it and where the money had no opportunity to earn interest.

The servant tried to explain to the master that he knew how ‘exacting’ the master was and he did not want to lose His money. The master didn’t buy it. He ordered that the one talent be given to the first servant who was able to convert 5 talents into 10. (Reference Matt 25:14 and Luke 19:12).

Although I believe the story or parable was strictly about economics and frugality, it can be extended to include, not only money, but true talents (i.e., ability).

The cornerstone of my book, The Logic of Success, is the premise that unless you find out what it is you were meant to do, true happiness will elude you. Finding out what it is you truly want takes time, patience and perseverance. In the first chapter I discuss how to create ’search patterns’ to find your true calling. (Get a Free copy at www.thelogicofsucccess.com).

Now, I want go beyond the obvious of telling you about your hidden talents (you already know you have one, two or more). I want to address the ‘How’ talents were (and are) buried within us.

As children, we all loved to discover new things. We even did things when others advised us not to (e.g., touching the stove when Mom said it was hot). We wanted to learn, we wanted to discover for ourselves the world around us. Failure and pain were not yet transformed into anxieties.

As we got older, we were expected to act a little more responsible and accountable for our actions. Like in any soap opera drama, this is the scene in your life where ’society’ steps in and starts benevolently imposing its norms on your behavior. You are now expected to:

a) conform

b) be more realistic

c) put away childish things, and the most brutal of all norms,

d) STOP thinking about yourself first.

So, what do we do? Exactly! We abide by each one.

We start to conform by dressing like everyone else, and doing all the things “normal” people are expected to do. We even adopt their mannerisms, language and way of thinking.

We then stop dreaming and imagining ourselves doing wonderful things because we’re told we should be more realistic. So what happens? We no longer create alternative visions of how our life could be and settle (i.e., compromise) for what’s given; the mundane, the routine.

We then put away our childish ways because we need to be more mature and responsible. No more having fun like balloon fights, dancing when no one’s around, throwing food in the air to catch with our mouth, seeing how many times you can burp on one sip of Coca-Cola, or who can do the longest fart (sorry, I went too far). You get the idea.

Then the final act is committed. And as we grow older we commit a form of individual suicide of the mind. This is when we begin thinking of others, and forgetting ours. We begin sacrificing our desires for what others (e.g., society) needs before our own. And every time we have the audacity to think of ourselves, we immediately castigate ourselves by reminding our inner world that we can’t be selfish.

The long term result? You get a job, you stay at and as you get older you wake up one day to the reality most people experience at one time or another, “Hey, I’m not happy with my life.” You’ve done everything society has told you to do, but, you’re still not happy. You have a great family, you have a decent job, the kids are doing well, and you’re participating in all kinds of community events and fundraisers and so on.

Here’s something scarier. You’re unhappy but you don’t know why or what it is you want to do with your life! You don’t seem to have a ‘real’ talent and life doesn’t seem to have meaning or purpose. Sound familiar?

Most people (i.e., society…again) label this a mid-life crisis. Not me! I’d like to label it: The Awakening. The quintessential moment in your life is when you wake up, rub the conformist eye gunk away and realize that your life is running out of time.

And here’s why you can’t find your talent. Over the years with every compromise and acquiescence of self, you were slowly burying your talents deeper and deeper. You now have the problem of having to unearth your talents after so many years of heaping selfless dirt on those childhood dreams.

Start now by giving yourself some time, a few moments in a day to remember, to think back on those things that gave you great joy and pleasure. Think about what you’d like to do and would make you happy. Break the bonds of conformity and to hell with being realistic for the moment. What is it that you’d like to do?

Now don’t get me wrong here. I’m not advocating a nihilistic view of life where you revolt and jeopardize all you’ve built. Far from it. What I am advocating is that you remove the subjective barriers, limitations and begin to think about your possibilities, your wishes and desires. Then, formulate a blueprint which you can implement over time to help you excavate that ONE talent that lays buried within you.

If you were the servant in the parable and the master were to appear before you, would you be like the third servant who did nothing with the talent given? The greatest human tragedy is the death of potential, your gift, your talent, without you ever being aware of it.

Find you talent, and start digging today. Here’s a tip: start with fond memories and recall those times when you really enjoyed yourself doing an activity. That’s where X marks the spot.

Ready? Get set! Start digging!

Getting out the Door

Early in the mooring I have lots of things to do before we finally head out to door to take my wife to work. Along with making some coffee and breakfast for us to enjoy and get us through the morning, I have some chores to do. Fist of all I need to get the dog and cat fed. Then I need to toss some clothes in the laundry, and get some ironing done. Then, when the baby gets up we need to get her fed. Usually I will need to keep her entertained by reading a story, or playing ball with her. When my wife gets out of the shower, it is time for her to feed the baby, if she has time and enough milk supply, she will also pump a bottle or two of milk for the little one to enjoy later on in the day. With the wife traveling so much it is important for her to keep the milk supply on the up and up. We can’t go running out of breast milk can we? We like to keep the freezer stoked up to about a week or two soppy. After the baby gets fed, my wife gets dressed, we head out the door, and venture into the long drive to the city.

The 411 on Selecting and Achieving Your Goals

Do you know what you truly desire to accomplish, obtain, or become in life? Not just a vague idea, but what you really want to do? Psychologists and sociologists theorize that because there are so many more options available for the average person in this new millennium, the decision-making process has become too convoluted, and has begun to actually hinder success. Achieving goals is a step by step process, with making a decision about what to accomplish being just a part of the whole process itself. So how does one select the appropriate goal?

Take for example the college student who must decide on a major by his or her junior year. Once upon a time when so few people were pursuing higher education the decision about what to major in was often a family decision. The choice was made by the determination of how best a degree would serve the purposes of the family and/or the community. Of course gender played a significant affect on the available options. But today just about anyone can major in, study, or become anything they want. Talk about your bevy of choices, definitely not an easy task.

High school, freshman and sophomore years are supposed to be “trial” years in which a student is exposed to enough different subjects and careers from which to choose, but many students still have a difficult time making a decision. Take a second and think of all of the people you know who are unhappy in their current jobs. Pay particular attention to the people who you know should not have chosen their current careers. Granted, sometimes circumstance and necessity play a huge factor, but when choice is involved the current trend is that a very small percentage of individuals are happy with their choice. Is it possible to change? How does one go about narrowing the playing field before they make their choice? The key is taking the time to become familiar with yourself and carefully outline your goals with clarity.
Goals are incredibly individualized things. While two people may share the same goal, their motivation, anticipated result, and path will probably all vary. Whether you write them down or envision them, the first step is to determine why you are creating a goal. What will it do — create for you, or change for you? The answer to the question will let you know if you’re on the right path. See, if a goal will create less free time for you, and your spouse is currently commenting that he/she never sees you, then this could be a conflict. However, if it will in the short term take more of your time, but free-up 50% of your time in X months, then you and you spouse may be able to come to an agreement.

Next determine what your goal(s) actually are. If you have several goals classify them and narrow them down. Will they assist you financially? Will they help you achieve better health? Will they nurture your spirit? Will they celebrate your passions? Is there a seemingly natural way to pursue them? For instance it would seem likely to begin with yourself and branch outwards towards goals that you have less control over. For example, focusing on your spirit (something you control), before you tackle a new career (which involves yourself and others). Especially since a calmer, focused spirit will make it easier for you to achieve your financial goals. A long list of goals may seem like an insurmountable task. However, once they are classified you may find that some may be eliminated altogether, others may be better focused on at a later date, and some may be combined with others for greater clarity. It’s not the length of the list, but your ability to concentrate on the goal to make it a reality that is the key.

Once you have determined the why and determined the what, next determine how, which will also answer where it will be accomplished - the action, duration and location. Will you accomplish an exercise goal by hiring a personal trainer or by purchasing a video or DVD? Will you pursue your education through distance learning or classroom education? Any of these means are an acceptable way to reach a goal, but a method that will bring success to one, may not bring success to another. While you are determining how, don’t forget too schedule the duration. An indefinite amount of time is too wishy-washy. So set a time frame. Remember to take your views into consideration. If you have difficulty making long term commitments then signing up for a lifetime gym membership could be a tad intimidating, while if you are detailed and organized a six month or longer workout program may be just what you’d excel at. It is important to determine what will work best for you. The more individualized the plan, the higher the rate of success.

Goals are unique. They can be set, modified, implemented, and even stalled. But the key to goals is you - the individual. Parents have goals and dreams for their children, but while they can put them on the path it eventually becomes up to the individual to carry on with the journey. Change is always possible and can begin with the tiniest of steps. Each tiny step will bring you closer to where you want to be. Embrace the possibility, crave the potential, and celebrate your decision. When you know the decision was made with you in the forefront, you’ll know that it’s in line with your passion.
