Leadership and The Dirty Work

The airline, Jet Blue, has been featured in many magazines as a new company that has hard great results and success so far. A lot too has been mentioned about the challenges they face ahead and about the culture they created at the start and are working hard to foster now. One of the many things that sets Jet Blue apart is their focus on teamwork. Here’s one example. They have no cleaning crews - every employee on the flight (including pilots and those not working but on the flight) cleans up the plane. This saves time and money - both things very important to any business.

When I say everyone helps clean, I mean everyone - including the CEO, David Neeleman. Neeleman helps the flight attendants hand out snacks and helps clean up. This takes Neeleman’s words about teamwork and turns them into action. He is quoted as saying, “You can’t ask employees to do something you aren’t willing to do yourself.”

I learned this lesson from my father growing up on a farm. There were many tasks I was asked to do - some of them much more unpleasant than picking up newspaper and snack wrappers on a plane - but all of them were done knowing that my Dad had done them and was willing to do them still, even if he had higher priority work to do.

This is an extremely important lesson for us as leaders. Being willing to do the grunt work, the dirty work (call it whatever you want - on the farm there was some VERY dirty work) builds commitment and shows that all of the work in the organization is important.

As a leader, please don’t push this off saying you want to delegate and make people responsible for their own work. Delegation and ownership is important to be sure. If you always delegate the unpleasant stuff, but always want to help with the more glamorous tasks, your comments of delegation will fall on deaf ears.

Help. Show up for clean up. Be a part of the team. These actions will make you a better leader.

It is furthermore the choice to overhaul and refresh even if it be your self and some condominium. Perfumed Scented Candles are an incredible method to usher when we move to a new season. Flowery or perhaps fruity essences can be found what you yourself will most likely experiencing just now. Getting Your Carpet Right

What sets one carpet apart from another is the myriad of different materials and techniques that are used in the manufacturing process such as the different fibres and constructions. For example a bathrooms carpets would have completely different properties to a polyester carpet. The length of time a carpet will remain looking respectable without any noticeable wear and tear depends on a variety of factors. It’s advisable to analyse the material the carpet is made from the weight of the fibres used as well as the density of the pile all make a difference and should be carefully considered when selecting a suitable place for a particular kind of carpet.

When choosing carpet for your home its important that you choose the right kind of carpet for the right location. The carpet manufacturing process has improved hugely since the early days in unison with technological advances - subsequently this has meant there have been significant improvements in fibre technology which means that you will find it difficult to find any very low quality carpets these days. Even the cheaper carpets which are available are still infinitely better to carpets which were manufactured half a century ago. In those days it would have been unusual not to have worn carpets in your home. There still are some differences between carpets people need to be aware of though, even though they are less pronounced.

More often than not carpets these days are manufactured from materials which were not around fifty years ago such as a new type of polyester which is much more durable than previous versions. The new type is called PET fibre and has unique properties which means that it looks much more natural and give it the remarkable ability to resist stains much more effectively than other carpets. This makes them perfect for use in a school environment or indeed any environment where the floor is likely to be exposed to a lot of wear and tear.

Of course other than the physical property of the fibres of the carpet there are other major factors which need to be thought about such as the colour of the carpet as well as the price. This in combination with how durable the carpet is cover the main aspects of what you need to consider when you take the plunge into buying a new carpet for your home. Before technological improvements allowed for higher grade fibre to be packed more densely together, carpets used to wear thin as it was more often than not very thin and lightweight.

What do You Want to Accomplish in 2006?

Around this time of the year I love to ask people what their New Years resolutions are. Usually, the response I receive is that resolutions do not work so there’s no point in making them.

There is a reason why New Years resolutions rarely work. Call it a matter of linguistics. Notice, people want the resolution to work. For a resolution to become a reality, it is the person who must work, not the resolution.

Stating your resolution is just the starting point. Like any goal, the path to success is to define or visualize it, plan it and act on it. Defining the goal is part of the commitment to the goal. It is amazing how many people never take the time to write down exactly what it is they want in life. Remember, you can’t hit a target if you don’t have one. Studies have shown that people that have goals and write down these goals are high achievers.

Important goals are often overwhelming. It is immensely helpful when you break down your goal into definite pieces or steps with appropriate time frames and an articulation of resources needed. Call them mini-goals or action plans. Each time you accomplish a mini-goal, you are that much closer to the whole goal. Remember, each small success builds your confidence and your skill set for achieving the greater goal.

“The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable.Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.
” Denis Watley”

To be successful in attaining your goals, they must be:

1. Specific - identify the outcome you want in very specific terms.

e.g. If Genie asked you for 3 wishes and you said that you wanted a large house, make you add that it is not on swamp land etc.

2. Right - fair to everybody, based on integrity, honesty and everyone would benefits.

3. Stated in Positive terms - identified in terms of what it is you do want, not what you don’t want. Your goal should not be to lose weight but to become healthier. Then you can define what being more healthy means for you. How would you feel when you are healthier? What would you look like? What would you be able to do that you can not do now?

4. Emotional - move it from your conscious to your subconscious, get excited by it, bring in other people, work on it, keep looking after it and visualize success.

Define It!
• Define your goals, write them down, and be very specific; capture your goal(s) on paper.
• Ask yourself what are the consequences if I do not achieve my goals. Make a list?
• Do I have too many goals?
• What are my priorities?
• Identify what you really want. You goal is not to lose weight; it is to be healthy.

Plan it!
• Determine what the time line is for reaching your goal(s); set specific deadlines for each goal. Ask yourself the following questions.
• Are my timelines realistic?
• What steps do I need to take to achieve my goal(s)?
• Who can help me achieve this goal (s)?
• What obstacles may stand in your way? List them, and state how you plan to overcome them.

Act on it!
• What do I need to do daily to achieve my goal?
• What do I need to do weekly to achieve my goal?
• Do I need to adjust my plan?

On a weekly basis, reflect on how much progress you are making towards your goal(s). It is important to take the time to identify all of your accomplishments that you make along the way towards achieving your goal and celebrate them.

Consider working with a coach. If you are serious about getting what you want, coaching is an ideal way for you to set and achieve better, more meaningful goals in a unbiased relationship that is totally focused on your success.

A New Conversation About Dreams: Who’s Directing Your Life?

While aspects of you encourage, “Go for your dreams,” simultaneously other parts threaten, “Don’t you dare.” A cast of characters lives inside of you and at different times you may receive conflicting or contradictory messages. If you are want to be happy, successful, and fulfilled, consider putting your “dreamer” in the director’s chair.

What are the voices inside of you saying? As you turn the volume up on the voice of your dreamer and down on the voice of your doubter, you can practice discernment allowing for greater clarity. To assist you in hearing these voices, let’s set up a simple scenario. Picture something you want, something that matters to you. Choose a personal or professional dream and consider how these various parts of you might respond.

Dreamer - The dreamer inside says, “What if…” and is open to a creative process without over-analyzing it. This is the part of you that imagines, believes in possibilities, has hope, and seeks kindred spirits. Dreamers talk about their ideas with intention, clarity, and passion. Great dreamers get others excited about their vision. And most importantly, successful dreamers take action to make their dreams a reality.

Doubter - This voice is often heard saying such things as, “I don’t think this is a good idea.” The doubter provides concern touting, “But what if…” and imagines the worst. If you crank the volume up it can even become annihilating with accusations shouting things like, “Are you out of your mind?” William Shakespeare said, “Our doubts are traitors.” Carlos Castaneda said, “In order to experience the magic of life, you must banish the doubt.” My favorite quote on this subject is in The Prophet where Kahlil Gibran wrote, “Doubt is a feeling too lonely to know that Faith is its twin brother.”

Realist - “Be realistic…” Modulate the doubter down a notch or two and it becomes the essential voice of the realist. This part wants to know, “What’s the plan?” including where is the time and money coming from. However, in the early phase of dreaming, you may not know. The challenge is not to allow the realist to immediately turn into a doubter who might judge or obliterate your idea. Honor this voice by (to the best of your ability) giving it the information it needs. If you ignore or reject it, it will cleverly agitate or distract you. Being realistic offers prudence and makes you do your homework but if you are overly realistic or go to strategy too soon, you will most likely compromise the dream and kill your passion.

Visionary - This voice says, “Anything is possible so let’s dream big!” These are the leaders and people we look up to and admire. They have learned the process of realizing their dreams and embody what it means to be a big dreamer. Setbacks or failures do not stop them. Simply put, a visionary has a vision and invites others to join them. They are found in all walks of life and we are often so inspired when they are in the presence of a true visionary that we sign up just to be near them or part of what they’re doing.

A visionary is not defined by the size of the dream since dreams are precious and come in all sizes, shapes and areas of life. If you were living your dream life, how would it be different? What do you see yourself doing? How many lives would you touch? What would you change? Who would you help if you were truly living as a visionary?

Avoid Sabotaging Your Dream

When these different voices merge they can become muddled and result in confusion and poor decisions. For example, you might poison your dream by projecting doubt into it. Then with each step you take toward what you want, you also move toward your doubt. Doubt and fear, which most of us may have at some time or another (especially when embarking on a new or big dream) do not belong in your dream. These feelings are simply part of your reality. This is a subtle and essential point.

Here’s a simple technique for avoiding this sabotaging pattern. On a piece of paper draw a line across the middle. On the top half write out your dream with as much detail as possible. On the bottom write out your reality in relationship to your dream, where you are now. Reality usually includes good news and (so called) bad, as well as any fear or doubt you may have. Just state the facts and your feelings about them.

Now, which one are you more committed to; your dream or your reality? We tend to choose “reality” when we don’t have a clearly defined dream or when we saturate our dream with doubt. If your dream is loaded with your worst imagined nightmares, reality will always seem safer and saner. But doubt placed appropriately as part of your reality, allows two things to happen. First, no longer blown out of proportion, it’s an obstacle that basically requires a strategy to manage it. But more importantly, with doubt where it rightfully belongs, you are free to move forward.

It’s like a play. All the characters have wisdom and insight, but you can’t clearly understand them when they’re speaking at once. Take time to tune in, to listen, and on a regular basis, have the courage to give your dreamer its directorial debut or even the leading role.

Leadership For Deep Results: Without Them Are You Wasting Your Leadership And Your Life? (Part Two)

How does one go about getting deep results? There are many paths up this mountain. But one path is straight and steep and clear. That is the path of the Leadership Imperative.

I WILL LEAD PEOPLE IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY NOT ONLY ACHIEVE THE RESULTS WE NEED BUT THEY ALSO BECOME BETTER AS LEADERS AND AS PEOPLE.

The Imperative has two parts: one is results-accomplishments and the other is self betterment.

You are never more powerful as a leader as when, in getting results, you are helping others be better than they are — even better than thought they could be. Guided by the Leadership Imperative, you’ll find yourself realizing deep results.

Deep results are not a measurement or a direction. They are not a central purpose. They are a process of being. They are not something achieved. They are an achieving taking place not at a special place in a special time but at every place at all times.

You are deep results before you know that you are. Though deep results are easy, though often they do not come easily.

We are this mind/body in this space/time continuum. We know that. But to realize it, we must live it. To live it, we must seek it in our living. And that knowing and living and seeking is deep results.

The task that we shoulder reveals our heart to the world. Deep results show our soul to the world.

Examples of deep results:

–With the disasters of the Franco-Prussia War tumbling down upon Paris, a remarkable event took place, the word of which spread like wildfire through the city. The great author Victor Hugo, exiled for 19 years, had come back to Paris. Traveling through German lines, through the war-ravaged countryside, he had come into the city on virtually the last train. He had come to share the sufferings with the Parisians in their darkest hour when his arriving meant virtual imprisonment in the city. Throngs gathered at the station to applaud him. One man shouted over the crowd, “If defeat brings us Victor Hugo, we couldn’t be better rewarded!” - deep results.

–Doug Collins, member of the ‘72 U.S. Olympic team that ultimately lost the gold medal on a disputed call to the Soviet Union, describes the dramatic moments at the end of the game. We’re losing by one. The Soviets have the ball. The clock’s running out. I hide behind the center, bait a guy into throwing a pass, knock it loose and grab it. A Russian goes under me as I’m going up for the lay-up. I’m KO’d for a second. The coaches run to me. John Bach, one of the assistants, says, ‘We gotta get somebody to shoot the fouls.” But coach Hank Iba says, ‘If Doug can walk, he’ll shoot.’ That electrified me. The coach believed in me. I can’t even remember feeling any pressure. Three dribbles, spin the ball, toss it in, same as in my backyard. I hit ‘em both and got the lead. I didn’t know what I was made of until then.” -deep results.

–Herb Rammrath, a General Electric client of mine in the late 1980s, told me this. “I was a young Naval officer reporting with many other new sailors aboard an aircraft carrier. The captain met us in a formation on the flight deck. He shook my hand and went down the line greeting many other sailors. I didn’t think anything of it until several weeks later when he passed by me in a passageway. He said, ‘Hi, Herb!’ I never forgot that. He remembered my name despite the fact that he had met scores of new sailors that day. It’s made a tremendous impact on me till this day.” -deep results.

–Seeing abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison dragged with a rope down a Boston Street, Wendell Phillips became so outraged that he joined the abolitionist movement and became one of its most effective activists. -deep results.

Many people go through their careers ignorant of deep results. But when you view your career as a whole, don’t you think that the ultimate yardstick of your life should be deep results? Deep results are not about getting but giving, not about doing but becoming, not about material accumulation but about the enrichment of human relationships. From now on, when thinking about getting results in your jobs and your career, think too of the deep results you should achieve.

Goalsetting - How to Easily Set and Get Your Goals

Which of the following changes to your life do you want to make to your life this year?

  • To have a slim and trim body?

  • Find a stimulating job

  • Take up a sport or hobby

  • Buy your dream home

  • Travel to an exotic destination

  • Have more time with your family

  • Establish your own business

  • Double your income

  • Become involved in the community

  • Develop your creativity

  • Improve your skills

  • Create a plan for your financial future

  • Have more fun.

  • Enhance your current relationship or find a new partner.

  • All of the above

To help you channel your energy into achieving this year’s goals, here are some practical ways to get you started. After all, there is no reason why you shouldn’t start immediately, is there?

Goalsetting - Getting Started

Write a list of what you want to achieve this year.

Make sure what you’ve written down is specific, measurable and attainable. Eg. Lose 5 kgs by 30th April.

Write no. 1 against the most important goal. Write no. 2 against the next most important goal.

Continue numbering the rest of the goals.

Look at the goal with no. 1 next to it. ie. Lose 5 kilos. Start a separate list with the heading Lose 5 kilos by 30th April.

Write down the action steps you need to take to achieve this goal:

  • Join gym

  • Decide which specific days and times you will attend

  • Purchase gym gear

  • See nutritionist

Enter the action steps into your diary/electronic organiser on the day/s you will do these:

  • Jan 15th - join gym

  • Jan 16th - book nutritionist

  • Attend gym Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 6.00 a.m.

Ensure when you book time for yourself in your diary you treat it as a top priority. Unless there is an earthquake or equally devastating disaster occurring, keep that time sacred.

To ensure your goalsetting is successful, it is imperative to write your goals first and then plan the appropriate steps to take in your diary. Otherwise your goals could end up being wishful thinking!

Goal/Dream Chart

Having visual reminders is a valuable part of the goalsetting process. It’s a great way to prompt and keep you motivated to follow through. Cut out a picture of the body you’d like to have from a magazine and stick a photo of your head on top of it. Alternatively if you want to recapture the way you were some time ago, find an old photo of yourself. You can place these on your desktop, car dashboard and the fridge at home.

Do this for your other goals (minus the head). In fact having a dream chart with pictures or words of the things you want to achieve is a great stimulus for your sub-conscious mind. Sticking these reminders onto green paper is even more effective. I have one of these in my office and guess what? It actually works!

Action Is The Key

Once you’ve identified what you want, written it down, planned when you will take action and done your goal/dream chart, nothing will happen unless you get off your butt and take action towards those goals.

Avoid the ‘Too Much Too Soon’ Syndrome

Often people try making many changes at once then get disillusioned because there are too many things to do and just give up. If you’ve done this in the past, tackle one goal at a time. If you really have difficulty going it alone, you may benefit from using the services of a life coach like myself who will keep you on track.

Dare to Fail

In Billi Lim’s bestselling book “Dare to Fail” he shares the following story:

A woman once walked up to a little old man rocking in a chair on his porch.

“I couldn’t help noticing how happy you look”, she said. “What’s the secret for a long happy life?’

“I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day’, he said. “I also drink a case of whisky a week, eat fatty foods and never exercise.”

“That’s amazing, the woman said. “How old are you?”

“Twenty-six”, he said.

The Final Word On Goalsetting

You too can achieve your goals if you really want to. The goals you set must fit in with your values. For instance if you really value your health and well-being (and you should…you’re no good to anyone if you’re sick or even worse…dead,) then it will be easier for you to take action around this area.

Goalsetting is an ongoing process. Plan and get off your butt now to achieve what you want in your life otherwise you could get stuck in the usual rut and before you know it, another year has passed by.

Take action today!

Confused About Exchange Rates

A good many companies can simply get really disconcert when it gets to the heart of exchange rate terms, yet the insider jargon really is quite plain. Thus regardless of whether you are a sole trader or a large corporation seeking to change foreign currency; below are a few easy and painless explanations that can with a bit of luck kill off all of the mystery & make the oftentimes misunderstood process of making significant extra money through exchanging foreign currency a tiny fraction easier. If you are ready to do a money exchange? check out this site.

Commencing with the most uncomplicated of definitions an exchange rate is the price at which one specific nations currency could be swapped to another’s. And so, for example the rate would be the amount of Cayman Islands Dollars you will receive for each Israel New Shekel.

Fixed exchange rates are furthermore recognised by the term ‘pegged exchange rates’; pegged exchange rates are put to use to stabilize the value of a nations currency; especially at moments when that currency is changing in value a great deal; this helps to aid overseas business & investment.

Floating exchange rate - this is when a national currencies current value is set by natural market forces. This is a much more hazardous way to conduct business but of course this is the situation wherein you will often enjoy the opportunity to earn a good profit,

You should also hear talk of animals in currency; a bull is a person that foresees that market values will go upwards and a bear is someone who predicts that market values will fall. A bull market is a marketplace where values are actually going up conversely a bear market is the exact opposite - a market where prices are actually going down.

A currency broker is someone that acts as an intermediary person in-between yourself and the market place - currency brokers are oftentimes in the position to obtain you the choicest price during periods when you are looking to purchase or sell.

The dollar rate is the value that one unit of any currency has against a single unit of the American Dollar; this is a very useful barometer for a currencies value.

This is very obviously by no means an extensive selection of terms - merely a starting point; but with a little studying you might be substantially on your way to becoming a financial expert in no time at all.

Reveal the Leader Within

A Leader is not a certain type of person or position of power. It is not the one at the top of the golf leader board at any specific time or the person at the top of an organisation. It is YOU. In this article we want to show you how to reveal the leader within. To give you some ideas, methods, tips that will make you think and, if you want to, enable you to reveal the leader within you.

First; What is a Leader? Ponder this question for a while.

What is a leader to you?

What image does the word leader conjure up for you?

Is it someone with charisma?

Perhaps it is someone who is able to get others to do what they want?

Or someone who is able to get individuals to do the impossible?

Is someone born a leader or are they made?

What about world leaders. Are they bred, made by their political parties or carbon copies of their idols?

It is difficult, isn’t it, to define a leader. But we all know one when we see one or are in the company of one. We would like to suggest that a leader is YOU. You have inside you the skills and abilities to lead others. All you lack is the belief, confidence in yourself and the determination to succeed.

Now think of your life.

Spend a little time answering the following questions:

What are your priorities in life?

Do you know what you want or what you need?

Quite often wants and needs are transposed and become confused. Try the following exercise:

Take a piece of A4 or letter size paper and write at the top: What I want is……….

Now write down the things that come into your head don’t edit or hesitate. It doesn’t matter how ridiculous they appear just keep writing until you feel you have exhausted all topics. After all you are the only one who is going to read them.

Now, on another piece of paper write: What I need is……………..

And repeat the process.

At the end you have a list of wants and needs look at them, think about what you have written. What are you trying to tell yourself? Are there any themes?

You should now have a rough idea of what your priorities in life are. Can you answer the following:

Where am I now?

What really drives me?

What is my passion?

Where am I going?

You now have an idea of what you believe in. What it is that really drives you and is your passion. You now have what the text books refer to as a clear vision. A vision about which you are deeply passionate. To be a successful leader all you need is zeal and enthusiasm for your passion and the capabilities to put your passion into action. Unlike the text books we are going to suggest;

1. You have the capabilities and what you don’t have you will pick up on the way. If you build your vision from your capabilities it can only limit your vision. The secret is to build your vision from your passion and then the capabilities come flooding in. The more you follow your dreams the more experience you gain.

2. You do not need influencing skills. Leadership influencing skills are many and various but most involve some form of manipulation e.g. rousing speeches, getting help from persuasive others, persuading others to do what you want but all the time pretending you are doing what they want etc. etc.

For us, the most important style is: Being an Example or a Sample. Remember actions speak louder than words….Walk your talk…… We all know that if someone does not do what they say we soon get discouraged and question their ability and credibility.

To be an effective leader you just need to live your passion. If people like what they see they follow you. You lead by setting an example for others regardless of what influencing skills you do or do not have. As Theodore Levitt, a Harvard University professor, stated, ‘Only people who believe in themselves generate believers’. All you have to do is believe in yourself.

Chrissie is a McTimoney Chiropractor. A very good chiropractor who believes passionately in what she does and the method she uses. A quiet person who lets her expertise do the talking. She rarely markets herself, other than to give lectures on her subject, but her surgery is always booked and she has a loyal following of patients. How does she get her work? It’s simple. Her patients tell their friends. If you told Chrissie that she was a leader she would disagree giving many points to the contrary. But, Chrissie always has time to listen, is always focussed on the patient and their diagnosis, is always caring and her whole being tells you, you are in confident, professional hands. The result is, people travel miles to see her. She has followers, therefore she is a leader. She lives her passion, her beliefs about the McTimoney method, and because people like what they experience they follow. Chrissie does not want to be the best in the world she just wants to give her personal best to each and every patient. To her, success is the feeling that she has done all she can to relieve the pain and suffering of her patients.

The secret Chrissie has, as well as determination, skill, passion and desire, is love for her patients and the world in general. For us, Love in Leadership is so important. Love ensures that you are not stuck in your own ego. It keeps you focussed on what you want to achieve and ensures you operate from a place of inner strength; your feelings rather than your head all the time. When you operate from a place of love you tend to really listen to others and respond to their true issues and concerns rather than manipulate the situation to get what you want. Love ensures you use such qualities as self confidence, self respect, consistency, decisiveness, integrity and honesty in your decision making.

To reveal the leader within, discover what you really believe in… what is your passion… then start talking about it. Your excitement will start to influence others and before you know it.. You have followers. You are a leader. To move forward and lead is a personal choice. It is your life. The only right answer is whether the result makes you happy.
