We didn’t see the recession coming, but here it is, and we’re well mired in an economic slowdown. You may even be recently unemployed. You can turn off the radio, but you can’t get away from the fact of life that the United Kingdom is in a recession and it’s not going away anytime soon.
So what to do? The orthodox ways of looking for a job are not so effective when you have 90 other people trying for the same position. Picking up the paper, going to the unemployment office, etc - good luck with all of that.
Much more effective is to be proactive in places your competitors (other job searchers) are in fewer numbers. These days a lot of companies display job vacancies on their company website, so use a search engine and type in key words to target local firms. Use a variety of key words between locale only e.g. jobs Staffordshire UK, and locale and profession e.g. cleaner jobs Tamworth Staffordshire.
One more idea is to work for yourself - become self-employed. What we’ve learnt over the last year or so is that large firms can go bust very quickly. Self-employment means you control your own destiny, which is something no staff worker of a firm can ever say they have. The main thing is you pick the kind of work you enjoy since you will need to motivate yourself everyday.
