Some Common Myths with Regard to Botulinum Toxin
Sydney Botulinum treatment (BoTox for short) is now popular in Sydney society in fact it is becoming a grooming essential for people in Sydney.
Nevertheless I am always stunned when I listen to the ridiculous myths in connection with this treatment. I have included below some of the popular myths that I encounter working as a physician at Star Cosmetic Medicine located in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Misconception no. 1: I may lose my facial expressions!
Beneath the skin of the face are 60 or so muscles. These normally work in harmony, but with time crow’s feet and fine lines may form. Too many treatments of Botulinum Toxin have the effect of the face becoming less taut. The dose used by virtually all doctors are designed to make you look well rested, but still you will always keep your normal expression.
So by injecting a carefully calculated amount of the preparation in just the right spot facial expression is protected whilst any fine lines and wrinkles undergo a softening effect.
Misconception no. 2: Botulinum is poisonous!
There is a grain of truth in this. Its medical term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In very large doses it may loosen muscles that you do not want loosened and may even cause illness.
However to help us understand the reality of the situation: an old pharmacist’s saying states that ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. A large quantity of any medication can induce illness. Water can be fatal if too much is taken.
Misconception no. 3: BoTox is painful!
The hypodermic needles used at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter smaller than your hair. Several people have equated the treatments to a bug bite. Certainly not as sore as having a blood test.

Misconception no. 4: BoTox will deaden the feeling in my face!
Totally incorrect. Botulinum medicine works primarily on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax your muscles is impacted by BoTox injections.
Misconception no. 5. You cannot stop getting BoTox or the lines and wrinkles become more noticable!
Also false.
One set of injections is effective for about three months. Any further injections after the first visit should last a few weeks more. The lines will eventually re-emerge as the muscle returns to normal. However they will certainly be no deeper than before.
As A Matter Of Fact the wrinkles will generally be less pronounced than if you had never undergone BoTox - even if you never continue the treatment. This, of course is generally because your facial muscles and skin have had a rest whilst the treatment was effective.
