The government’s new digital inclusion champion, Martha Lane Fox, has set out a plan to provide internet access to nearly six million British people, who are in the lowest economic strata and have no internet access currently.

Fox, who was speaking at the Reboot Britain conference in London, in her first public speech after taking over the new role emphasised on the need to focus on this section of the society. She described the move as a right step towards an inclusive development of the country and leveraging the fact that the government is well acquainted with this section of the society.

Fox reasoned that by not providing internet access to the 25 percent of the population means keeping Government’s costs high because the greater part of the government’s interactions occur with the people who belong to the lowest income group.

The Government, while releasing the latest Digital Britain report, announced the role of Digital inclusion champion. According to BBC reports, Fox has met several first time users in the UK Online Centre. These online centres are to play a key role in the project as they will provide free broadband internet access to people who do not have ready access at their homes.
