As the container ignited, it exploded with an impact similar to that of a bomb, according to witnesses. The blast killed the two officers nearby. Although the firemen had decided to evacuate and withdraw from the fire, they were still standing close and trying to control the flames when the impact occurred. Some police officers were also injured in the blast.

Following this tragic incident, charges of gross negligence were brought against the owners, who in defence said that the firemen must have been aware of the risks involved in standing close to a fire site. The judge presiding over the case agreed that fire fighters must be trained better to deal with such emergencies, but also stated that this does not absolve the owners of guilt in the accident.

The judge said that the owners had violated explosives regulations in keeping such hazardous material inside unlicensed containers, and this put the responsibility for the accident squarely on their shoulders. Martin Winter and Nathan Winter were given seven-year and five-year jail sentences respectively after charges of manslaughter were levelled against them.
