Registry Database for Windows 98ME

Registry is the name of Windows hierarchical database, that Windows uses to store options and configurations for a Microsoft Operating System.

The registry contains set-up for components of low-level operating systems and the applications based on that platform. Registry is used by device drivers, the kernels, SAM, user interface, services and all the third party software.

Windows registry also offers a way to access counters to profile performance of the system.

The Windows Registry was first launched in the market with Windows 3.1 to store important configuration information for COM-based components.

But the use of Windows Registry extended with the launch of Windows NT and Windows 95. It included a large number of per-program INI files wherein configuration settings for Windows had been stored.

The MS registry has two essentials: keys and values.

Inside keys, Registry Values are stored and they actually represent name/data pairs.

Manipulation of registry values is carried out by the API functions of Windows, which access names of values discretely from their key paths and/or from Windows handle that acknowledges the parent key.

Although, the term is a little bit confusing, with values resembling associative arrays, wherein standard definition suggests that a key is the name portion of value.

The terminologies are a proffer from the 16-bit registry of Windows 3, wherein keys did not possess arbitrary pairs of name/data, but instead had just a single unnamed value that essentially needed to be a string.

The biggest advantage of Registry in Microsoft Windows is that it can be edited manually with the help of regedit.exe or regedt32.exe in the Windows directory.

Although, neglectfully editing the registry can result in irreparable damage or you end up with a slow Vista. Therefore, Microsoft and several industry experts, including the writers and editors of leading trade magazines, have highly recommended to perform backups of the registry prior to editing it.

A straightforward implementation of the present-day registry tool surfaced in Windows 3.x operating system, dubbed as “Registration Info Editor” or simply “Registration Editor”.

Typically, it was merely a database of applications that are used to edit OLE objects embedded in documents.

But the users need to be cautious as the two editors on the aforementioned platforms differ tremendously.

An integrated program of these two distinct programs was firstly seen in Windows XP. The operating system embraced the REGEDIT.EXE interface and infused the REGEDT32.EXE functionality into it.

These editors do not show such differences on Windows XP and newer systems. For instance - REGEDIT.EXE is the more refined and sophisticated editor, while REGEDT32.EXE is only a stub that invokes REGEDIT.EXE.

The Registry Editor permits users to carry out functions that follow:

  • Importing and exporting .REG files, exporting data in the binary hive format
  • Creating, manipulating, renaming and deleting registry keys, subkeys, values and value data
  • Finding particular strings in key names, value names and value data
  • Bookmarking user-selected registry keys as Favorites

Linux platform too allows for editing the registry with the assistance of an open source tool called Offline NT Password & Registry Editor.

The 7 Steps to Promoting Your RSS Feeds on Your Website

RSS gets 100% of your content delivered, but it’s no good if no one subscribes to your feeds.

So your first order of business after planning and creating your feeds has to be promoting them to your visitors.

The only problem is that most internet users still don’t know what RSS is, so you do have your work cut out for. But using the system outlined below you shouldn’t have any problems. Actually, after implementing this system, you should be achieving better results than the majority of publishers out there.

1. HOW RSS FEEDS ARE GENERALLY PROMOTED

RSS feeds are generally promoted using the orange XML or RSS buttons, and often also with buttons that enable visitors to subscribe directly to the feed with their RSS reader.

Usually, if clicking on the RSS button, the visitor only sees a lot of confusing XML code. They in fact need to copy & paste the link in to their RSS reader. But since most still don’t know what RSS is, using this approach will only waste potential subscribers.

To achieve success, you’ll need a different approach.

A] Create an RSS presentation page, on which you explain:

- What RSS is
- How the visitor will benefit from using RSS
- Where they can get a free RSS aggregator (recommend one yourself!)
- How they can install it (provide step-by-step instructions)
- How they can subscribe to your RSS feeds
- Why they should subscribe to your own RSS feeds

Then, on this same page, include the links to all of your RSS feeds.

In addition to the standard orange RSS button, also include direct links for subscriptions via MyYahoo! (get it here http://my.yahoo.com/s/button.html) and other relevant services, such as Bloglines (http://www.bloglines.com). There are about 5 RSS readers you should cover with these buttons.

B] Now promote this RSS presentation page as much as you can using all of your available channels.

2. LOCATION AND CONTENT

It’s all about location, just like with the subscription box for your e-zine. If they don’t see it, they won’t subscribe. And if you don’t motivate them enough to check-it out, they’ll just ignore it.

A] Promote your RSS feeds directly below your e-zine subscription box, and always “above the fold”. Promote your RSS presentation page (telling your visitors that’s where they can subscribe to your feeds) on the most prominent locations of your site.

B] If you’re publishing more than one RSS feed, but rather a couple of focused topic feeds, promote each of them next to their topics. For instance, if you’re publishing an RSS feed on E-mail Marketing, promote the RSS feed at the top of the topic home page, and in every E-mail Marketing article you publish. These links should actually be direct subscriptions links to the feeds.

Use this service to cover all of the important readers using just one simple button: http://www.methodize.org/quicksub/

C] Promote your RSS feeds in all of your e-mail messages and e-zine issues.

D] As for the content, don’t just say “Subscribe to receive news from my site”, but rather prepare compelling copy to specifically show your visitors why they need to subscribe to your content in the first place and why they should subscribe specifically to your RSS feeds.

3. ENABLE AUTO-DISCOVERY

Some internet browsers, such as Firefox, make it easy for their users to subscribe to RSS feeds. The browser actually asks the user if he wants to subscribe to the feeds the browser finds on the site the user is currently on.

Yes, this is even more powerful than your e-mail subscription form, since the browser in a way “pushes” the user with your RSS feed subscription.

But in order for the browser to do this, you need to help it out to find your RSS feed.

Just include the following piece of HTML code in the section of your webpages and you’ll be all set:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="ENTER_RSS_URL">

There are many more techniques and opportunities available to you, from “direct subscribe” links to actually using opt-in forms, but these 7 steps should get you started in the shortest time possible, and help you achieve a better visitor-to-RSS-subscriber conversion rate than the huge majority of sites are achieving today.

Some Identity Theft Victims End Up With Criminal Records

There are many ways to find you are the victim of identity theft. You can find out after you are turned down for a loan or after you start getting strange bills for items you never purchased. Here is another, more traumatic way to discover that your identity has been stolen.

Imagine. You are driving to dinner with your wife and kids and suddenly a police officer pulls you over for a broken tail light. He sits behind you for a few minutes, running your plates for warrants.

When he approaches the car he addresses you by name, naturally you respond. Next thing you know you are handcuffed in the back of the police car! Why?

According to police records, you were cited for speeding and failed to show for your court date.

After investigating further, you find you are the victim of identity theft. Unfortunately, you have to assume the burden of clearing your name. The police will not.

How can you protect yourself? Start with these three rules.

  1. Check your credit report frequently, at least yearly.
  2. Shred all personal and official correspondence before placing in the trash.
  3. Report any discrepancies immediately!

How practical is our story. According to the Identity Theft Clearinghouse one in six identity theft victims will end up with a criminal record!

Nothing can guarantee you will not become a victim of identity theft, but you can take positive action to reduce the risks. The only question is, will you?

Preventing Identity Theft - Tips for Personal Security

America, it’s time to take an aggressive stance in preventing identity theft! The odds of the average American becoming the victim of such an outrageous crime are greater than you might think. In fact, with today’s technology and just a little creativity, thieves can quite easily capture your personal identity for the purposes of draining your funds, charging expensive items to your credit cards and recreating their entire lives to virtually become “you”. There are effective ways to fight this epidemic - it’s just a matter of familiarizing yourself with them.

Financial Transactions

Let’s face it, there’s no way to function within society without participating in some type of financial transaction on a regular basis. Whether it’s going to the ATM, applying for a loan or charging merchandise on a credit card, we’re all caught in the electronic loop and will need to find an effective means for preventing identity theft.

  • Don’t place outgoing bill payments in your mailbox for mail carriers to collect.
  • Make sure that the keypad is shielded when you type in the PIN number for your ATM banking transactions.
  • Pick up boxes of new checks directly from your bank; never have them mailed to your home.
  • Don’t include your social security number or driver’s license number with your pre-printed name and address on your checks.
  • Don’t write credit card or bank account numbers on your checks.

Credit Cards

Too many people become lax in the area of credit card information. So many folks order merchandise over the phone or online using these cards, and little is done in the way of preventing identity theft.

  • Don’t apply your signature to your credit cards, instead write on the back -in permanent ink- “Ask for driver’s license” or any variation.
  • Don’t get into the habit of carrying all of your credit cards with you - only carry what you’ll need for the purposes at hand.
  • Shred any unused documentation that contains your credit card information, and do the same with pre-approved credit card applications.
  • Never dispose of credit card receipts by simply throwing them in the wastebasket. Always shred them before disposal.

Social Security Number

This is one of the most commonly stolen bits of data today, which helps to cement identity theft. By protecting this precious piece of personal information, you can do much in the area of preventing identity theft.

  • Memorize your social security number, and never carry your card or other document that may contain the number, in case of theft.
  • Don’t allow your social security number to be used as an ID number, either at work or on various types of accounts.
  • When obtaining a driver’s license, request that your social security number is not used as your driver’s license number. Although this is a common practice in some states, you do have the right to make such a request and be assigned a different number..
  • Never print your social security number on your checks.
  • Request a statement from the Social Security Administration showing your earnings and benefits every few years, to ensure that everything is correct.

These and many other precautions can be taken to ensure that you’re protected from identity theft. Although there’s no sure-fire guarantee that it won’t happen to you, prevention is certainly the best medicine - just ask anyone who’s ever been the victim of such a crime.

Search Engine Optimization for RSS Feeds

Tips for Helping Your RSS Feed Perform!

In some ways RSS is very similar to HTML, the language commonly used to create websites. Just as with HTML, webmasters using traditional search engine optimization tactics when creating an RSS feed will find that their RSS feed receives additional exposure and interest.

Simple steps to optimize an RSS feed for search engines:

1.) The title should contain important search terms.

To state the obvious, the title should be relevant and not misleading, while still emphasizing keywords. Ultimately, the title should entice the reader to read on, not mislead them.

2.) Display RSS feeds.

Most webmasters display their feeds as content on their website. When displaying a feed be sure to use PHP, ASP or HTML so that search engines will spider the contents of the feed displayed. If using a template to display feeds, use header tags to define the appearance of the Channel Title and Item Titles. Many search engines weight header tags with more importance. See Displaying RSS Feeds for additional information - http://www.small-business-software.net/display-rss.htm

3.) Internal & external Links.

Within a feed you should always use the full path of any links, keeping in mind that other sites may syndicate the contents of the RSS feed. Links that are not local to the site should launch a new browser. While this is not specific to search engines it will help keep visitors on your site.

4.) Link text should emphasize keywords.

It is no longer a deep, dark secret that the text used for incoming links will help a site contextually define the keywords that the site appears for in the search engines. Keeping that in mind, be sure to use keywords in any link text that points back to your website.

5.) My.Yahoo and My.MSN.

This is surprisingly simple to do but often overlooked by publishers and webmasters. The fastest way to have an RSS feed spidered by Yahoo or MSN is to include the feed on a personal my.yahoo or my.msn home page. Simply create an account on the respective search engines and customize the home page to include your RSS feed. This is done by adding content and listing the URL to the RSS feed. Typically, within 24-48 hours the feed’s contents will be spidered and indexed by Yahoo and MSN.

6.) Theme feeds.

Feeds should be themed. This will help with themed links back to a publisher’s website from anyone syndicating the feed’s content.

7. ) Link popularity.

Increase link popularity by submitting the RSS feed, blog or podcast to the appropriate directories. The following directories allow submissions of specific kinds of RSS feeds. Be sure to follow the guidelines of each site and choose categories wisely.

Submit Podcasts - http://www.podcasting-tools.com/submit-podcasts.htm

Submit RSS feeds - http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-submission.htm

Submit Blogs - http://www.blog-connection.com/submit-blogs.htm

8.) RSS feed descriptions.

RSS feed descriptions are generally summaries or introductions to other content. Often, feed creators will provide additional information on an HTML site, enticing the reader to click through for the full information if it is a topic that is of interest to them. Provide enough teaser copy that the reader can easily discern if the contents are something that is important to them.

9.) Subscribe to feeds.

This might seem obvious, but a surprisingly large number of publishers do not subscribe to their own feed. This is a great way to visualize what your customers see, and experiment with formatting and integrating HTML into feeds.

10.) Image ads.

Add your corporate logo to your RSS feed. Create a brand and enforce that brand by including the image in the RSS feed. The image will enhance your corporate identity and dress up the look of your feed by adding your corporate logo.

11.) Alphabetical rank.

Many feed readers list feeds alphabetically in the reader. Feed channels that begin with A will naturally appear in the top of the feed list in most feed readers. If you wish to appear in the top of list of feeds that a reader has subscribed to, keep this tip in mind.

12.) Meaningful Links

Each item in your feed should contain a unique URL associated with it. This will direct users to associated information. Many find using target URLs with the “#” symbol in the link to identify specific content useful.

Most marketers have a love-hate relationship with search engines. Search engines have the abilitiy to make even the most confident webmaster feel powerless . Let’s face it - all of us have felt the wrath of the search engine powers-that-be at one time or another, and while it may be difficult to know what line was crossed or how we fell out of favor, following some basic guidelines will be helpful in optomizing feeds for search engines.

Using RSS to Make Money Online

Most of you have seen those little buttons on websites labeled RSS or XML. If you are wondering what they are, RSS means Really Simple Syndication. Really simple because when you subscribe to a site that has this feature, you keep up-to-date with new information without having to check the site every day. This is really good news because you can use it to get newsfeeds from major news networks, news on new movies, even your favorite musician’s tour dates or CD releases.

This new twist to the Internet is very valuable to you as a Internet marketer too. Imagine replacing email marketing with RSS marketing. People actually subscribe meaning they want your information updates, similar to opt-in newsletters. With newsletters you have to write them and your site content. With RSS, when you update your content, all subscribers are notified by their newsreaders.

Newsreaders are special software that read RSS feeds. To get started, download a free RSS reader.

If you use a Windows PC, go to http://www.rssreader.com

For Mac users, see http://ranchero.com/netnewswire

Once you are set up, here’s all you or your customers have to do…

Right-click (control-click for Mac users) on any RSS button on a site, blog or news source that interests you. Select Copy Shortcut (”Copy Link to Clipboard” for Mac, “Copy Link Location” for Firefox browsers), and paste that URL into your RSS Reader. And that is it, you are subscribed. Once you get started, your favorite parts of the Web come to you. No need to go out and check for updates all the time. If you do not want to download software, subscribe to your favorite feeds through My Yahoo or My MSN.

So how does any of this make you money?

More traffic means more money. By placing RSS on your website or your blog, anyone can subscribe automatically and know when a new product or service is available. This new breed of Internet shopper is not to be ignored. To take advantage of the traffic you have to make your RSS feed available to website visitors and submit your feed information to RSS, blog and XML type directories.

Here’s how you get RSS for your site!

Go to http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss for the best source of RSS and Blog information. There are several file types for RSS and here you learn which is best and why. The easiest and fastest way to learn more about this technology and see it in use is to go to http://rss.sitesell.com where you find all you need to know about RSS, including solid marketing ideas.

There is no need to become a techie, no need to know all the ins and outs of RSS and XML. There is a huge need for you to know enough about this newest technology to use it. Once you do, it becomes easy to see how you make money online with RSS. In the same way newsletters and opt-in email are used for successful marketing, RSS is much easier, faster, and a much less intrusive way to communicate with potential or existing clients and customers.

It’s very critical to provide exactly what people want to make money online. How can there be a better way to do that than to allow people to subscribe to their wants and wishes? Start using RSS and XML technologies to make money online now before it too becomes the jungle email marketing is. To add fuel to your marketing fire, use optimized content for frequent updates to your blogs and web pages and deliver it with RSS.

The Internet changes quite quickly. RSS seems to be made to stick around, at least until something bigger and better comes along. It is easy to setup and monetize. Online entrepreneurs should take advantage of this new technology as soon as possible. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, so start now to reach a very targeted, eager audience for your opportunities.

RSS For Fresh Content & Better Ranking

A lot of commotion was made some time ago when webmasters discovered RSS (Really Simple Syndication) as a method of disseminating information like ezines, articles and website updates.

For a while it was even being tauted has the big
replacement for email marketing.

A few caught on to it’s potential while others passed
it off as the latest internet fad that would soon come
and go. And there for a while it looked like they might
have been right.

But, as it appears from our tracking of RSS
development I see that it’s popularity has grown
tremendously (to include blogs) and is being used
a lot more to provide fresh content for websites
and is fast being considered one of the best ways
to keep search engine spiders coming back.

Search engines love fresh relevant content. Note
the keyword in the last sentence is ‘relative’.

At first you had to be pretty tech savvy to figure out
how to set up an RSS feed and get if listed so people
could find and benefit from it. But that process has
gotten easier - a lot easier.

As a matter of fact there are a couple of software
programs that we know of that provide methods for
webmasters to get the great benefits of more search
engine traffic using RSS feed criteria. I use one and
it does work beautifully. You can judge for yourself
by going here http://www.cashway.com/rs

In case you’re new to RSS and you wonder what it
can do for you and your website here’s a brief summary.

By definition, RSS is a lightweight XML format designed
for sharing things like news headlines and other web page
content. But the bottom line is, RSS is simply a popular
and convenient method of sharing content between websites.

You see, regardless of what topic or subject matter you’ve
built your website around, there’s valuable content available
out there such as… articles and information written by an
expert in that particular field. And since that kind of content
already exists - AND a large portion of it is available through
the magic of RSS feed capability - YOU don’t have to create
the content yourself.

So how does that help you?

Let’s face it - most webpages can’t get a good page rank
because the competition is so fierce. To add to it, the
tactics now being used by everyone arn’t working very well.
RSS is still in it’s infancy, why dare I say it’s barely out of the womb. But the internet world is starting to take notice and
beginning to understand it’s impact as a marketing tool as
well as a viable way to improve a sites search engine rank.

So Now…

- You spend less time writing fresh new web content.

- Your website can be displaying quality theme-based content… automatically!

- Content is always highly relevant to what you’re promoting.

- Search Engines make more frequent visits because your site is constantly updating.

- You have more time to market your site, products, etc.

- Having quality fresh new content gets your web pages indexed faster.

- Usable on any website or as many pages as you want.

- RSS content (through topic channels) has the potential to deliver highly relevant content to site visitors.

- RSS compliments your website and marketing efforts.

That’s all well and good you say, but is there a downside
to using RSS feeds on my site?

Good question.

Not really, but there may be a couple of items you need to
take into considerations before you jump into the RSS game.

First you need to find relevant feeds for your site. Not
an overwhelming task but something you’ll want to spend
a little time searching for on Google or other major search
engines.

You’ll need a feed reader in order to display the content on
your site and make it available to search engine spiders.
You can easily do a search on google to find free rss readers
for your site.

You’ll then need to do a little copy and paste of the html
code into the webpages you want the content to appear on.
This can be a daunting task especially if you have a site with
a lot of pages that you want the search engines to spider. But
if you strategicaly place the code on pages that spiders have
visited you will have spiders looking for more pages with relative, fresh content.

In the long run once you have RSS feeds on the pages you
know are going to be spidered then all of the tedious work
is done and you can spend your time on other issues.

You can see how to automate this process by going to
http://www.cashway.com/rs or you can start using our
RSS feed on internet marketing by going to this webpage
and copying the code and pasting it anywhere on your
webpages. http://www.cashway.com/article_syndication.htm

We update our RSS feed with new articles, tips and strategies
1-2 times a week

All indications show that RSS feeds are on the rise because
of their less intrusive nature, relevant targeted content, can
be personalized, accessed through a variety of media, no extra
data is collected from viewers and the industry and developers
on the whole are making strides in increasing add-ins and features, such as ability to track results of its use, and to better integrate it for users and viewers alike.

So for 24/7 fresh content for your web pages and better search
engine recognition you should be looking at using RSS feeds in
the very near future.

6 Reasons Why RSS Beats Email Marketing

A brand new marketing tool predicted to replace email is
currently sweeping the World Wide Web like a storm.

The Internet is experiencing the so-called “orange” revolution
and there’s no stopping to it. The online marketing world is
rigorously seen chanting a 3-letter mantra, R-S-S.

Yes, RSS is here and it’s got substance, material, style,
sophistication…

In a word, it’s got the ‘X’ factor.

RSS, which stands for “Really Simple Syndication”, is the newest
and the fastest growing technology online. Many publishers,
webmasters and marketers are adopting RSS. It has helped spam go
down to a great extent and made bulk messages a thing of past.

No wonder spammers are shaking in their boots all over the web!

Here are 6 strong reasons why RSS beats email marketing to the
core:

1. Kiss Spam Filters Goodbye - RSS can help you distribute your
content directly to your subscribers, without any spam filters
interfering. Your messages will never get blacklisted and
blocked and will always be delivered promptly, unless and until
your subscribers choose to end the relationship themselves.

2. Subscribing Is Easy - Your subscribers don’t have to worry
about giving out any of their personal details to subscribe and
read your RSS feeds. All they need to do is, add your feed to
their online or desktop RSS reader and that’s it. They are ready
to receive and read content from you without any hassles.

3. Un-subscribing Is Easier - Removing your subscriber’s email
from your email list automatically has it’s own share of
problems, and it doesn’t work all the time. However, when you
talk about RSS, it’s easy for your subscribers to unsubscribe
from your publication. They can stop receiving
messages from you any time by simply deleting your feed from
their RSS reader. Simple as that!

4. Get Your Message Out In An Instant - Whenever you have
something new to publish, all you have to do is update your
already published feed and your message gets updated everywhere
it’s subscribed. No more worrying if your subscribers got your
message or not.

5. Never Get Accused of Spam - It’s very easy to get accused of
sending unsolicited mail nowadays since people forget they even
gave you their email address. RSS solves this problem
completely, as the messages which you send out, will appear
directly in your subscribers RSS reader. So the question of
contacting them illegally does not even arise.

6. Build Long Lasting Relationships - Not only RSS builds a
strong relationship with your existing subscribers but also
helps in attracting new potent subscribers who are interested in
what you offer. People who subscribe to your feed want to
receive content from you and hence, can be regarded as
subscribers you can count on.

RSS can work like a charm for your business and help you gain
thousands of quality subscribers and leads within a few weeks…

You just have to become a part of the orange revolution!
