Chile Completes Its Transition To Democracy by Brian McAfee

In two key decisions Chile has restored her democracy lost on September 11, 1973 when Gen. Augusto Pinochet overthrew democratically elected president Salvador Allende in a bloody Coupe supported by the United States.
On July 6, a Chilean court ruled 11 to 10 to remove Picnochet’s immunity he had granted himself when he became dictator in 1973. This opens the door to the families of those murdered and tortured by his regime to pursue legal action against him. There were more than 3,000 leftists murdered by the Pinochet regime and over 20,000 tortured.
In addition to the court decision the Chilean senate voted to remove several privileges Pinochet had granted himself and his military cohorts. Among those was Pinochet’s self proclaimed right to personally appoint 9 senators, 4 of whom were appointed by the military or police forces.
Full civilian control over the military has now been restored and the power of the president to sack any of the military commanders is now granted.
Chile’s current president, Richard Lagos, will end his term in December. The leading contender to replace him is a medical doctor, Mrs. Michelle Bachelet. She currently has a 47 percent lead in the multi party survey just done. Mrs. Bachelet is a socialist and is expected to continue the liberal social policies of the outgoing present Lagos.
Mrs. Bachelet lived in political exile during the Pinochet era and is highly respected and charismatic. If she is elected she will become Chile’s first woman president. Her main principles include social justice and equality.

The Kravis Center

Recently, Claremont McKenna College announced that they accepted landmark gift worth $75 million from the Marie Josee and Henry R. Kravis Foundation.

The Claremont McKenna College named the building after Marie Josee Kravis and Henry Kravis in recognition of the landmark gift.

Designed by famous architect Rafael ViSoly, The Kravis Center will serve as a dramatic new entrance to the Claremont McKenna campus. Upon its completion in 2010, The Kravis Center will house state-of-the-art classrooms, five of the College’s 10 research institutes, faculty offices, as well as the Office of Admission and Financial Aid. Made even more splendid by a series of exterior terraces and a center courtyard, the building will be perfect for informal gatherings.

Marie Josee Kravis’ husband Henry has always made it his responsibility to extend whatever help and support he can to Claremont McKenna especially since the college has given him a lot in terms of education and preparing for the real world. The $75 million, according to him, serves as his and his wife’s commitment to the college.

In 2006, Marie Josee Kravis, together with her husband, founded The Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership. Some of its recipients include Roy L. Prosterman, Fazle Abed and The Forum for African Women Educationalists.

Info Commerce

Intelius and the Commerce of Information
The primary reason why people turn to the Internet is information. There are a thousand search engines and research methodologies where people can get information. The Internet has expanded and evolved significantly over the years and this is because our needs for the kind of information have evolved, too. On a business perspective, information is critical for security and forecasting of trends. There is clearly a need for consolidated information of publicly available information. Naveen Jain, founder and former CEO of InfoSpace, believes that the Internet still fails to provide people with the useful and, therefore, relevant real world information we need. He founded Intelius in January of 2003 with a vision to consolidate publicly available information and make it accessible anywhere and anytime, by any device that can go online. Intelius started out as an online information service providing basic public information on individuals, including court records, address information, and the various associations between people. This information can be used for background checks and protection against harassment and theft. With this revolutionary vision of information commerce, Intelius received national and international attention. Intellius won the 2006 Stevie Award for Best New Company and received nominations in the 2007 CODiE Award for Best Online Consumer Service, and the Stevie Award for Most Innovative Company. The vision to deliver real world content on the Internet - anywhere and anytime, on any device, has obviously paid off. Since 2003, the customer base has expanded 762%, indicating the success and wide adaptability of its product and services. With a large database and the company’s access to accurate hard-to-find data, they provide predictive information for business or research purposes. Intelius now offers the Cell Phone Caller ID service. Similar to the caller ID system at home, Cell Phone Caller ID allows a customer to use the Intellius site to research basic information regarding a number that appeared on their mobile and/or telephone line.
